The Advantages of Pot Luck

As it is with many folks I am sure, this summer is not filled with exciting trips to exotic and foreign places for me. I am enjoying being at home. The garden is in bloom and I've had the pleasure of sharing it with friends during several parties here.  We sit out in the back at the round, glass table, sip some nice red wine and share conversation about life and what is happening.

It's good enough for me and very enjoyable. I must admit that, since my husband died more than 10 years ago, my life has evolved in a way that is pleasing. At first I was grasping for a new partner. Now I feel content and grateful that I didn't end up with any of those men that I dated during that time. This seems to be my time and I am happy with it.

With my friends, we've managed to make some great food together here. One group of friends were folks that I work with. Although we've had lots of lunches together, this was the first time that we've gotten together at someone's home.

Well, I have a love of pot lucks and building a meal. For this one, I bought the tri-tip roast. Someone else brought the largest loaf of crusty french bread you ever saw, along with a nice pinot noir. Another couple brought the sauce for the tri-tip and barbequed it too. And last but certainly not least, we had the best chocolate cake you've ever tasted along with the story of how it was made even though this person had a broken wrist, all for the love of chocolate which was great after the beef.

It was a memorable meal and we agreed to do it again. That's especially what I like about pot lucks. When everyone brings something, then they are easy with coming over again because they know you didn't knock yourself out buying stuff and preparing something elaborate.  That makes it easy to do again and again.

And my church women's group came last Friday. We've been doing this for 15 years on the first Friday of the month, taking turns at eachother's homes. I roasted a chicken, we had salad and fruit and a quiche. It was all yummy and best of all, we were able to catch up with eachother and share where we are on the journey.

The next one is a party for the neighborhood on the 18th. I will roast a turkey and we'll see what treats show up for that one.
