Journaling: Not the Best Golfer in the World

OK, so I'm not the best golfer in the world.

This is for the journalers out there. It's about golf, but it's also about writing life stories. Every day we are going here and going there and doing this and doing that. Well, what we do and where we choose to go paints the picture showing who we are and what we give our attention to. As my friend Jay Speyerer of Legacy Road Communications said, "you are interesting now, but you'll be fascinating 50 years from now!"

When we write in our journal, some of those entries can turn into life stories. Let's just say I had a journal entry about playing golf.

It has been at least 5 years since I've gone golfing.

Last weekend I went to the driving range and it gave me a new taste for the game. I was with a friend who was interested, but needed some lessons to get going so that he doesn't start out with bad habits. I wasn't about to tell him how to hold the club or stand or anything. He'd had a few lessons to begin with and I don't feel at all comfortable in the role of golf instructor. So I just went off to hit my bucket of balls. As we wandered into the pro shop later, I realized that they were calling quite a few singles up to the first tee. I thought to myself, "Well, I can just go out there by myself and play! I don't have to go with someone."

So today, Sunday morning, I got up nice and early and threw my old golf clubs and beat up golf shoes into the back of the car and went up there.

There weren't many people there, which was great. The day was going to get quite warm and at this time, it was just nice and sunny. I got matched up with a threesome. There was a couple and a woman friend of theirs. They were great. We all were playing at about the same level. The guy was better, and his wife was pretty good too, but overall, I was happy that I didn't feel like I was holding them up. I had a few shots that I liked and the majority at least kept me in the game. I did not keep score.  Mulligans were freely allowed. What's a mulligan you might be wondering? In the game of golf if you miff your shot, taking a mulligan means that you get to take a ball out of your pocket and give it another try. We had a few mulligans, each of us, not an overabundance of them, less than a handful apiece.

Since it takes over 2 hours to stroll along in the sun, we chatted and I found out that they had all just returned from trips. The couple had gone to Poland for a wedding which they really enjoyed and found to be very reasonably priced. I mentioned that my family is part Polish. The other woman friend of theirs had just gone to Manhattan and seen some plays, Hair in specific. She said, "I forgot about the nudity. Then I looked and sure enough the lead was naked, then I looked around and the whole darn cast was naked!"

I didn't even realize we had gotten to the 9th hole. We were done. It was fun. We all shook hands and they were off to the clubhouse for lunch and their customary gin and tonics. I went on to the Farmer's Market and then home.
