Cleaning out the Kitchen Drawers

Last weekend, since I once again couldn't find anything in my kitchen drawer, I finally decided to clean it out.

I pulled out the chopsticks that I only use when I've purchased deli food in a container because they seem fitting for that, even if it's Italian food and not Chinese. I figure I need the practice. There were old corks from wine bottles because I always have wine left and the cork never fits back into the bottle, so when I have a cork that looks like it would be narrow enough to fit back into a bottle that has some wine left in it, I keep the cork. Well, I pulled a whole bunch of corks out of the drawer. Considering that it's a drawer with serious height challenges, they took up alot of space.

There was silverware of course. How does it happen that there can be 8 teaspoons but only 5 forks? I am always looking for another fork since I only run the dishwasher once/week. I do not ever remember throwing a fork into the trash.

Well, one drawer led to another. Considering I have so few drawers, not on rollers mind you, but the old drawers in my cabinets that were build in 1951. To say they do not glide easily in and out would be a serious understatement. Another of my favorite power tools is my hand sander. I can plug that in someday and sand down the sides of the drawers and then put wax on them to make them slide easier. But that's for another day.

Meanwhile, I have this nice deep drawer and all it has in it is a holder with 6 large knives. I went to the Container Store and got a nice deep partition thing and put all the knives in one partition and that left space for the electric beaters, the whisk, the kitchen scissors and a whole bunch of other stuff.

There are two other drawers I never look into because they are on the other side of the counter. In the interest of thoroughness, I pulled them open and sorted through the debris. There were things in there I pulled out, ruminated over and still decided I had no idea what they were for. If it took me longer than 30 seconds to figure it out, they got tossed.

Overall, it was a cathartic experience and now I can actually find something. Correct that, now I can actually see stuff in there.
