April in Paris... and Your Stories

Here I am in my kitchen, the smell of spring vegetables gently simmering in white wine and garlic wafts over me. I remember a week ago, sitting in a cafe with my new friend Susan as we sipped red wine and reflected on the day we had just spent going to Reims and sampling Champagnes in two of the towns surrounding that cathedral where all the French kings were crowned.

What a wonderful opportunity, two weeks in an apartment in Paris, all by myself.

The apartment was sunny and overlooking the Seine which runs through the heart of the city. At night the lights on the riverbank beyond glittered against the darkness and the dinner cruise boats glided by.

I am back at work this week, but still basking in the afterglow of my trip. On my walk after work tonite, I couldn't help smiling at the great adventure I experienced, just being there and being able to spend 10 days noodling around on my own and meeting my new friends who helped me with all my questions. They were friends of some friends I have here and they were so welcoming that I felt right at home and they introduced me to new restaurants and we had a picnic in a park and it was all so much fun and interesting. I do want to improve my French for next time though. Most of them are transplanted Americans, but they have French partners too and it would be fun to be able to understand the conversations when they are speaking all in French.

This is an invitation to you to remember a very special trip that you took. You may have traveled outside the U.S., or not. But, as you know, there are some trips that live larger in our memories than others.

I remember one of the first stories that came up when I was designing this website. It was from a church friend of mine and it was about a trip that she took in the summertime with her family when she was 10 years old. It was hilarious. They packed up this volkswagon, bringing along all the comforts of home including a table and chairs. She said she couldn't believe they could get everything into that tiny car. But they were destined not to travel light. And when they arrived, sure enough they had all their comforts with them. The way that she wrote the story was so true-to-life that I still remember the details.

Maybe you also had a trip with your family when you were young. I remember my family driving across the country from Wisconsin to Washington D.C. because my Dad thought we ought to meet our Congressman. And we did that and even had our picture taken with him. But all we kids could think about was, "where's the pool?" It was a hot summer.

You can use these ideas as a launching pad and I am sure you have ideas of your own. Look back at some of your photos and that will help you to remember! Plus you'll have the added enjoyment of reliving your trip through pictures.
